Most of the sediment people dislike comes from pushing the plunger all the way through the bed. Skimming first and barely pressing gets you a cleaner cup with the same coffee.

The patient method
Skim the crust, then let the pot stand until the fine grounds sink on their own before pouring. It costs several more minutes and removes almost all of the grit.

How to go about it
Add the grounds, pour all the water at once, and leave it alone.
After the steep, break the crust with a spoon and lift off the foam and floating grounds.
Press slowly, only far enough to hold the grounds down.
